Windows 11 Cap FPS: What It Is and How to Set It Up

Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated

This page is a short, practical checklist for windows 11 cap fps on Windows 11 (versions 24H2 and 25H2). It covers the steps that apply in most cases and points you to our in-depth guides. For the full picture, start with our Windows 11 gaming guide.

Settings that matter

  • Game Mode: Settings > Gaming > Game Mode (on by default).
  • Graphics: Settings > System > Display > Graphics, to choose the GPU per game on laptops with two GPUs.
  • Refresh rate: Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, so a high-refresh monitor actually runs at its rated rate.
  • Power: Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode, and keep a laptop plugged in while gaming.

Drivers and updates

Keep the graphics driver current through Windows Update or the GPU maker’s app, and keep games and the Xbox app updated. If performance drops right after a driver update, roll the driver back in Device Manager.

Built-in tools

Windows key + G opens the Xbox Game Bar for captures, performance widgets and audio controls. Auto HDR and DirectStorage depend on the display, the storage (an NVMe SSD for DirectStorage) and on the game supporting them.

This page is a short checklist and has not yet been expanded into a full guide. Steps follow current Windows 11 menus; if your screens differ, check your version with the winver command.
