Windows 11 Digital License: Check It and Link Your Account

Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated

A Windows 11 digital license is a way of activating Windows that does not need you to type a product key. Instead, Microsoft’s activation servers keep a record that your specific hardware is licensed for a particular edition. If you upgraded for free from an activated Windows 10, or bought a Pro upgrade in the Microsoft Store, this is almost certainly how your PC is activated. The one thing you should do with it is link it to your Microsoft account, and this guide shows how.

What a digital license is

When a PC activates with a digital license, Windows sends a fingerprint of the hardware to Microsoft’s activation service, which then remembers that this machine is entitled to, say, Windows 11 Home. From then on, any time you install that same edition on that same hardware and connect to the internet, Windows recognizes the device and activates without asking you anything.

You typically get a digital license in these situations:

  • You upgraded from an activated copy of Windows 10 to Windows 11.
  • You bought the Windows 11 Pro upgrade through the Microsoft Store app.
  • You activated once with a product key; Windows then also stores a digital license for that hardware.

That last point surprises people. Even if you originally typed a key, a reinstall on the same hardware usually activates by itself.

If you do have a key, see our Windows 11 product key guide for where to find it and how to change it.

How to check whether you have one

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Activation.
  3. Expand Activation state.

The message tells you what you have:

  • “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account”: you are done. Nothing else to do.
  • “Windows is activated with a digital license”: activated, but not linked yet. Follow the steps below.
  • “Windows is activated”: activated with a key. Linking an account still helps.

The check your activation status page explains the other messages, including the not-activated ones.

Why linking to a Microsoft account matters

A digital license is tied to hardware. Change enough of that hardware, especially the motherboard, and Windows no longer recognizes the PC. At that point Microsoft’s activation servers see what looks like a new computer.

If your license is linked to your Microsoft account, you can tell Windows “this is still my PC” using the Activation troubleshooter’s I changed hardware on this device recently option. Microsoft describes linking as essential for that route to work. Without a linked account, your only options after a major hardware change are a product key or buying a new license. Our guide to Windows 11 activation after a hardware change walks through that process.

You need to be signed in to Windows as an administrator, and that administrator account needs to be a Microsoft account (not a local account).

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Your info. Check that an email address appears and that the account is listed as Administrator. If it says Local account, choose Sign in with a Microsoft account instead first.
  2. Go to Settings > System > Activation.
  3. If you see Add an account, select it, enter your Microsoft account email and password, and select Sign in.
  4. Return to the Activation page. The state should now read “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account”.

On many PCs signed in with a Microsoft account, Windows links the license automatically and the Add an account option never appears. In that case, step 4 simply confirms it has already happened.

Make a note of which Microsoft account you used. The troubleshooter only works with the account the license is linked to, and households with several accounts often forget which one it was.

Reinstalling Windows 11 with a digital license

A clean install does not lose a digital license, as long as you follow two rules:

  • Install the same edition. If the PC was activated as Home, install Home. Installing Pro on a Home license leaves you unactivated.
  • Skip the product key prompt. During setup, choose I don’t have a product key. Once Windows is online, it activates by itself.

If you want a fresh start without wiping everything, Reset this PC keeps the same edition and reactivates the same way. If activation does not happen after a reinstall, give it some time online, then run the troubleshooter from Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot. Error codes are explained in the Windows 11 activation hub.

What a digital license cannot do

  • Move to a different PC. Licenses from free upgrades and preinstalled Windows belong to that device. Linking helps you reactivate the same PC after repairs, not transfer it.
  • Change your edition. A Home license stays Home; moving to Pro needs a Pro key or a Store purchase.
  • Guarantee reactivation after every repair. The troubleshooter only appears while Windows is unactivated, needs an internet connection and only works with the linked account. If it still fails, Microsoft’s activation support, not a third-party tool, is the place to go.

Check your Activation page today, link your account if it isn’t linked, and a future reinstall or motherboard swap becomes a five-minute job instead of a headache.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have a Windows 11 digital license?

Open Settings > System > Activation. If the Activation state says Windows is activated with a digital license, you have one. If it also says linked to your Microsoft account, it is already linked.

How do I link my digital license to my Microsoft account?

Sign in to Windows as an administrator with a Microsoft account, then open Settings > System > Activation. Windows links the license automatically, or shows an Add an account option you can use to sign in.

Can I move a digital license to a new PC?

A license from a free upgrade or one that came with a PC stays with that hardware. Linking it to your account helps you reactivate the same PC after repairs, not move it to a different computer.

Will my digital license survive a clean install?

Yes, as long as you install the same edition on the same hardware. Windows activates automatically once it connects to the internet.
