Feature updates used to mean an hour or more of installing, several restarts and a nervous wait. For most Windows 11 PCs today, the yearly update is a small download and one restart, thanks to the Windows 11 enablement package. This guide explains what an enablement package is, which versions use one, when you still need a full upgrade, and how to install it safely.

What an enablement package is

Throughout the year, Microsoft ships new features inside the regular monthly cumulative updates. On PCs where the feature belongs to the next version, the code arrives but stays switched off. The enablement package is the switch.

Microsoft’s own descriptions:

  • For 25H2, Microsoft Learn says most of the files already exist on 24H2 devices that have a recent monthly security update, and that the enablement package is “a small, quick-to-install switch” that activates the 25H2 features.
  • For 26H2, Microsoft Learn says it builds on the same servicing foundation as 25H2 and 24H2, that eligible devices move to it “through a small enablement package rather than a full operating system upgrade”, and that installation takes a single restart in most scenarios.

Which versions share the branch

Microsoft’s release information, checked on 14 October 2026, shows 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 receiving the same monthly cumulative update (the October 2026 update, KB5127648, with builds 26100, 26200 and 26300 respectively). That shared servicing branch is what makes the enablement package possible.

Microsoft notes that 26H1 is scoped to new devices that came to market in early 2026 and is not offered as an in-place update from 24H2 or 25H2.

Why it still matters if you already have the features

Because the code is already there, some people wonder whether the enablement package does anything. It does two important things:

  1. It turns on the remaining new features that were dormant.
  2. It resets the support lifecycle. Microsoft says installing 26H2 resets support for the new release. Windows 11 feature updates get 24 months of updates for Home and Pro and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Microsoft’s release information lists 24H2 Home and Pro as at end of updates, 25H2 Home and Pro supported until 12 October 2027 and 26H2 Home and Pro until 10 October 2028.

So a 24H2 Home or Pro PC that has not moved on should install the newer version now. Our guide to check your Windows 11 version shows how to see where you are.

How to install it

  1. Back up anything important. The risk is low, but a backup is always the safety net.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install the latest monthly update first.
  3. When the feature update to the new version appears, select Download and install.
  4. Restart when asked.

Microsoft’s announcement of the 2026 update suggests turning on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available in Settings > Windows Update to be among the first to receive it. Leaving it off is fine; the update arrives in a gradual rollout.

If the update is not offered yet, the PC may be held back by a known compatibility issue while Microsoft rolls it out. Waiting is the safe option. Our Windows 11 feature update guide covers timing and deferral.

How to tell it worked

After the restart, confirm the new version in either of these places:

  • Press Windows key + R, type winver and press Enter. The window shows the version, for example 26H2, and the OS build number. Microsoft’s release information lists build 26300 for 26H2, 26200 for 25H2 and 26100 for 24H2.
  • Open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications for Version and OS build.

The enablement package also appears in Settings > Windows Update > Update history, usually under feature updates.

Because the move is so small, most people notice little immediately. Features that were rolled out earlier stay as they were; the main changes are the version number, any remaining features that were waiting for the switch, and a fresh support period.

Managed work and school PCs

On PCs managed by an organization, the IT department decides when feature updates install, often through update policies. If the update is not offered on a work laptop, that is usually deliberate. Microsoft notes that for commercial devices some features in 26H2 that were held behind temporary controls are switched on by default with the new version. Ask your IT team rather than forcing the update.

If it fails

Enablement packages rarely fail, because there is so little to install. If it does:

Coming from Windows 10

A Windows 10 PC does not get an enablement package. It needs a full upgrade, which takes longer and replaces the operating system while keeping files and apps. Microsoft’s Installation Assistant page lists Windows 11 version 26H2 as the current release. Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, and consumer ESU security updates run until 12 October 2027 according to Microsoft’s ESU page as checked on 14 October 2026. Start with upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 and in-place upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Windows 11 enablement package?

A small update that turns on features that are already on the PC. Microsoft describes it as a lightweight update that activates new features already included through previous monthly servicing updates.

Which versions use an enablement package?

Microsoft says 26H2 is delivered as an enablement package to eligible devices running 25H2 and 24H2, and 25H2 was delivered the same way to 24H2 devices.

Does my Windows 10 PC get the enablement package?

No. Windows 10 and Windows 11 23H2 are on a different code base, so moving to the current Windows 11 version is a full upgrade.

Is it worth installing if features are already there?

Yes. The new version resets the support lifecycle, and Home and Pro editions of 24H2 have already reached end of updates according to Microsoft's release information.

How do I get the enablement package?

Open Settings > Windows Update. When the feature update is offered, select Download and install. Turning on Get the latest updates as soon as they're available puts you near the front of the rollout.
