Windows 11 Network Discovery: Common Causes and Fixes

Start with the simple checks

Restart the PC (a full restart, not sleep or shutdown with fast startup).
Install pending updates in Settings > Windows Update.
Run any matching troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, or open the Get Help app.
Note the exact error message or stop code so you can search for it.

Repair Windows system files

Open Terminal (Admin) from the Start button’s right-click menu and run sfc /scannow. If it reports files it could not repair, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and then sfc /scannow again. These tools only replace damaged Windows files; they do not touch your documents.

Isolate the cause

Start in safe mode. If the problem disappears, a driver or startup app is the likely cause.
Undo recent changes: uninstall a recent update in Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, or roll back a driver in Device Manager.
Use System Restore if a restore point exists from before the problem started.

Last resorts

Settings > System > Recovery offers “Fix problems using Windows Update”, which reinstalls the current version of Windows while keeping apps and files, and Reset this PC, which reinstalls Windows and can keep your files. Back up first. If the problem survives a reset, suspect hardware: test the memory with Windows Memory Diagnostic and check the drive’s health with the maker’s tool.

Frequently asked questions

Will these fixes delete my files?

No. Restarting, troubleshooters, SFC, DISM and safe mode do not touch personal files. Reset this PC can keep files if you choose Keep my files, but back up first anyway.

When is it a hardware problem?

If the problem continues after a reset, or appears outside Windows (for example in the firmware setup screens), suspect hardware such as memory, storage or overheating.
