Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated

Safety first
Save your work and back up important files before you troubleshoot hardware. If the device is hot, swollen, smells of burning or makes grinding or clicking noises, stop using it: shut it down and unplug it. A clicking hard drive in particular can fail completely, so copy your data off it first if you still can.
Rule out software
- Restart the PC and install pending updates in Settings > Windows Update, including optional driver updates.
- Open Device Manager (right-click Start) and look for devices with a warning icon. Update, roll back or uninstall and reinstall the driver for the affected device.
- Check whether the problem also happens in the firmware (UEFI/BIOS) setup screens or before Windows starts. If it does, Windows is not the cause.
Firmware and maker tools
Many laptop and desktop makers publish firmware (BIOS/UEFI) updates and diagnostic tools that test the battery, storage, memory, fans and keyboard. Download them only from the maker’s support site for your exact model, and keep a laptop plugged in during firmware updates. Windows Memory Diagnostic (search Start) tests RAM.
Warranty and repair
If the device is under warranty, contact the PC maker or the shop before opening the case, because some repairs void the warranty. Be wary of anyone who cold-calls you about a fault or asks for remote access to your PC; genuine makers do not do that.

Frequently asked questions
Will these fixes delete my files?
No. Restarting, troubleshooters, SFC, DISM and safe mode do not touch personal files. Reset this PC can keep files if you choose Keep my files, but back up first anyway.
When is it a hardware problem?
If the problem continues after a reset, or appears outside Windows (for example in the firmware setup screens), suspect hardware such as memory, storage or overheating.
