Windows 11 Taskbar Not Working? How to Get It Back Fast

Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated

When the Windows 11 taskbar is not working, it can freeze so that clicks do nothing, lose its icons, stop showing the clock and notification area, or disappear altogether. In most cases the taskbar process has simply hung and comes back after a restart of Windows Explorer. When that does not last, the usual causes are a third-party customisation tool, a damaged user profile or damaged system files.

The steps below go from the quickest fix to a full in-place repair and apply to Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2, Home and Pro. If the Start menu is also broken, our Start menu not working guide covers the overlap.

Restart Windows Explorer

The taskbar, Start button and desktop are drawn by the Windows Explorer process. Restarting it is safe: open apps stay open, though File Explorer windows will close.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. (Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then Task Manager, also works.)
  2. On the Processes page, find Windows Explorer. If File Explorer is open it appears under Apps, otherwise under Windows processes.
  3. Right-click it and select Restart.

If the taskbar has vanished and Windows Explorer is not in the list, select Run new task at the top of Task Manager, type explorer.exe and press Enter.

If the taskbar keeps freezing, restart the whole PC with Start > Power > Restart rather than Shut down, so that Windows starts completely fresh.

Check taskbar settings

A taskbar that seems to be missing may just be hidden or on another screen.

  1. Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and expand Taskbar behaviors.
  2. Clear Automatically hide the taskbar if you want it visible all the time.
  3. On a multi-monitor setup, check Show my taskbar on all displays and When using multiple displays, show my taskbar apps on. Unplugging and reconnecting a display can leave the taskbar on a screen you are not looking at.
  4. If icons are missing from the corner of the taskbar, open Other system tray icons on the same page and switch on the ones you want.
  5. Under Taskbar items, check that the items you expect (such as Search, Task view and Widgets) are switched on.

Windows 11 does not let you move the taskbar to the top or side of the screen; you can only change icon alignment, which our taskbar alignment guide explains.

Install updates and remove customisation tools

  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install everything and restart. Taskbar bugs are often fixed in later monthly updates.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for apps that change the Start menu, taskbar, or File Explorer, such as classic-shell replacements and theme tools. Uninstall them and restart. These tools hook into Windows Explorer and frequently break after a feature or monthly update.
  3. If the problem started right after an update and nothing else helps, uninstall it from Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.

Before you uninstall anything, check whether the problem is already known. Microsoft lists confirmed issues for each Windows 11 version on its Windows release health pages, often with a workaround or a note that a fix is rolling out. If many people report the same taskbar bug after the same update, waiting for the next update can be safer than repairing Windows yourself. Note the update’s KB number from Update history so you can search for it.

Test with a new user account

If the taskbar works for a different user, your profile is the problem rather than Windows.

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Other users and select Add account. To add a local test account, choose I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, then Add a user without a Microsoft account.
  2. Sign out, sign in to the test account and use the taskbar for a while.

If it works there, you can move your files to a new account. If it fails there too, continue with the system repairs below.

Repair system files with DISM and SFC

  1. Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin). If the Start button does not respond, open Task Manager, select Run new task, type wt, tick Create this task with administrative privileges and select OK. If Terminal is not installed, type cmd instead.
  2. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and wait for it to finish.
  3. Run sfc /scannow.
  4. Restart the PC.

Our guides to DISM RestoreHealth and System File Checker explain what the results mean.

Isolate the cause with safe mode or a clean boot

If the taskbar works in safe mode but not in normal Windows, a third-party app or driver is involved. To narrow it down, perform a clean boot: press Windows key + R, type msconfig, go to Services, tick Hide all Microsoft services and select Disable all, then disable startup apps in Task Manager and restart. Turn items back on in small groups until the problem returns. Afterwards, choose Normal startup on the General tab of msconfig.

Graphics drivers occasionally cause taskbar flicker or blank areas, so install the latest driver for your graphics hardware as well.

Reinstall Windows without losing files

If nothing above works, repair Windows in place:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Next to Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current version of Windows and keeps your apps, files and settings.

If that is not available or does not help, System Restore can return to a restore point from before the problem, and Reset this PC reinstalls Windows with the option to keep your personal files. Back up first, and be ready to reinstall your apps after a reset.

Frequently asked questions

How do I restart the taskbar in Windows 11?

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, find Windows Explorer on the Processes page, right-click it and select Restart. The taskbar and desktop reload in a few seconds.

Why did my taskbar disappear in Windows 11?

Auto-hide may be on, the taskbar may be on another display, or Windows Explorer may have crashed. Restart Windows Explorer and check Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.

Why is my taskbar not working after an update?

Updates sometimes clash with third-party taskbar tools or expose damaged system files. Remove customisation tools, install any newer updates, run SFC and DISM, or uninstall the update.

Can I move the Windows 11 taskbar to the top or side?

No. Windows 11 keeps the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. You can align its icons to the left or centre in Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.
