Windows vs Mac
Windows 11 vs macOS: An Honest Comparison for 2026
Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated

Windows 11 vs macOS is one of those debates where both sides are partly right. Both are mature, stable desktop operating systems that handle browsing, office work, video calls and photo editing without drama. The real differences are in hardware choice, specific apps, gaming, and how well each fits with the other devices you already own. This hub gives a fair side-by-side so you can decide based on what you actually do, not on which logo your friends prefer, and points to our deeper comparisons for specific uses.
The short version
| Area | Windows 11 | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Thousands of models from many makers, plus self-built desktops | Only Apple’s own Mac lineup |
| Form factors | Laptops, desktops, 2-in-1s with touch and pen, mini PCs, handhelds | Laptops, desktops, all-in-ones; no touchscreen Macs in Apple’s traditional lineup |
| PC gaming | The main platform for PC games | A smaller, growing library |
| Business and engineering software | Widest compatibility | Good for mainstream apps; some niche tools are Windows-only |
| Creative apps | Strong, with the main suites available | Strong, plus Apple’s own pro apps |
| Phone integration | Phone Link works with Android and, with fewer features, iPhone | Deep integration with iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch |
| Upgrading or repairing parts | Common on desktops and many laptops | Very limited on current Macs |
If two or three rows decide it for you, you can stop here. If not, read on.
Hardware choice and repairability
This is the biggest structural difference. Windows 11 runs on PCs from many manufacturers at every size and budget, and you can build your own desktop. You can choose a 13-inch ultraportable, a 2-in-1 with a pen, a gaming laptop with a dedicated graphics card or a tiny desktop for under a monitor. Many desktops and some laptops let you replace the RAM, storage, battery or graphics card later.
macOS only runs on Macs. The upside is consistency: Apple designs the chips, hardware and software together, and the lineup is small enough that quality is predictable. The downside is less choice and very little upgradability, so you need to buy the memory and storage you’ll want for the life of the machine.

Apps and compatibility
For everyday software the gap has narrowed. Browsers, Microsoft 365, Zoom, Teams, Slack, Spotify and the major creative suites run on both. Where Windows still leads is specialist software: engineering and CAD tools, some accounting and industry-specific packages, older in-house business apps, and many hardware utilities. Where macOS leads is Apple’s own apps, such as Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, which are Mac-only.
Before switching in either direction, list the five apps you can’t live without and check each one. Our app compatibility comparison and Office on Windows vs Mac cover the common cases.
Gaming
This one is not close. Windows is the main platform for PC gaming: most games launch on Windows first or only, Game Pass for PC and the major storefronts are built around it, and many competitive online games use anti-cheat systems that only support Windows. Windows 11 also adds DirectStorage and Auto HDR on supported hardware.
Mac gaming has improved, and Apple silicon handles the games that are available well. But if gaming is a priority, Windows 11 is the practical choice. Details in Windows vs Mac for gaming.
Security and privacy
Both systems are secure when kept up to date, and both have built-in protection. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot capable firmware, and ships with Microsoft Defender Antivirus, a firewall, SmartScreen and Windows Hello. macOS has Gatekeeper, XProtect, FileVault and tight app permissions.
Windows is a bigger target simply because more PCs run it, which is why its defaults lean on blocking unknown apps and downloads. Both platforms let you control which apps see your location, camera and microphone. The habits that matter most are the same on both: install updates, use a password manager and passkeys, and be careful with downloads. See Windows vs Mac security.
Ecosystem and phone integration
If you carry an iPhone and use an iPad or Apple Watch, macOS offers handoff, shared clipboard, AirDrop, iMessage and other features that work with little setup. That integration is one of the strongest reasons to choose a Mac.
Windows 11 works with Android phones through Phone Link, including messages, calls, notifications and photos, and supports iPhone with a smaller feature set. OneDrive, Microsoft 365 and Edge sync across Windows, Android, iPhone and the web. If your household mixes Android and Apple devices, Windows is often the more neutral choice.
AI features
Both companies now build AI features into the operating system. On Windows 11, Copilot is available on all supported PCs, and Copilot+ PCs with a neural processing unit add on-device features. Apple Intelligence brings Apple’s equivalents to supported Macs. Feature lists change frequently on both sides, so compare the specific feature you care about; see Windows 11 AI features vs Apple Intelligence.
Running Windows on a Mac
Older Intel-based Macs could dual-boot Windows with Boot Camp, but Macs with Apple silicon can’t install Windows 11 directly. Microsoft documents two supported options for those Macs: running an Arm version of Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise in a virtualization app that Microsoft lists as supported, or streaming a Windows 365 Cloud PC. Both work well for running a few Windows apps, but they are not the same as a native PC for gaming or hardware-heavy work. Our Parallels vs native page covers the trade-offs.
Which should you choose?
A practical way to decide by use case:
- Students: either works; check what your course software requires. See Windows vs Mac for students.
- Business: Windows if your company manages PCs with Active Directory or Entra ID or relies on Windows-only apps. See Windows vs Mac for business.
- Programming: both are strong; Windows has WSL for Linux tools, macOS has a Unix base. See Windows vs Mac for programming.
- Video editing: both are strong; the choice often comes down to the editing app. See Windows vs Mac for video editing.
- Battery life: depends heavily on the specific model on both sides. See battery life compared.
Switching from Mac to Windows 11
If you decide to switch, the learning curve is shorter than people expect. The Ctrl key does most of what Command did, File Explorer replaces Finder, and Settings replaces System Settings. Move your files through OneDrive or an external drive, and set up Windows Backup early so your new PC is protected from day one. Our step-by-step guide to switching from Mac to Windows 11 covers accounts, files, shortcuts and app replacements.
The honest conclusion of Windows 11 vs macOS: pick the platform that runs your must-have apps and fits the devices you already use. Both will serve you well.
Frequently asked questions
Is Windows 11 better than macOS?
Neither is better across the board. Windows 11 suits people who want hardware choice, PC games or Windows-only business software, while macOS suits people invested in Apple devices who want one tightly integrated lineup.
Can a Mac run Windows 11?
Macs with Apple silicon cannot install Windows 11 directly. Microsoft documents two supported options: an Arm version of Windows 11 in a virtualization app that Microsoft lists as supported, or a Windows 365 Cloud PC.
Which is better for gaming, Windows 11 or macOS?
Windows 11. Most PC games are released for Windows first or only, and many online games use anti-cheat software that only supports Windows.
Do I need antivirus on Windows 11 or macOS?
Windows 11 includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, and macOS has its own built-in protections. On both, keeping the system updated and avoiding unknown downloads matters more than adding paid antivirus.
Is it hard to switch from Mac to Windows 11?
Most people adapt within days. The main work is learning new keyboard shortcuts, moving files and replacing any Mac-only apps.
