You can adjust screen brightness in Windows 11 in about two seconds once you know where the slider is, but plenty of people never find it, and others find that the screen keeps changing brightness on its own. This guide covers every method that Windows 11 offers: the Quick Settings slider, the Settings app, the keyboard keys on laptops, the automatic options that can make the screen dim or brighten without asking, and what to do when the slider is missing altogether.

The steps apply to Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2. What you see depends partly on your hardware: a laptop with a light sensor shows more options than a desktop PC connected to a separate monitor.

Method 1: the Quick Settings slider

This is the fastest route and the one most people want.

  1. Select the network, volume or battery icon at the right end of the taskbar. Windows key + A opens the same panel from the keyboard.
  2. Find the slider with the sun icon.
  3. Drag it left to dim the screen or right to brighten it.

The change is instant and stays after a restart. If you do not see a sun slider, skip to the section on a missing slider below.

Method 2: the Settings app

The Settings app has the same slider plus the automatic options.

  1. Open Settings (Windows key + I).
  2. Go to System > Display.
  3. Under Brightness and color, move the Brightness slider.
  4. Select the arrow next to Brightness to expand the extra options described in the next section.

If you have more than one screen, select the screen you want at the top of the Display page first. In most cases the slider only controls a laptop’s built-in panel.

Method 3: keyboard keys on a laptop

Most laptops have brightness keys, usually marked with a small and a large sun symbol on the function row. Depending on the model you press them on their own or together with the Fn key. Windows shows a brightness indicator when they work.

The keys are handled partly by the laptop maker’s own software. If they stop working while the Quick Settings slider still works, the problem is not Windows itself: check whether the Fn lock has been switched, and install the hotkey or control utility that your PC maker publishes for your model. Our guide to updating drivers in Windows 11 explains where to find maker software safely.

Automatic brightness options

Windows 11 has two different features that change brightness without you touching the slider. They are easy to confuse.

SettingWhat it doesWhere
Change brightness automatically when lighting changesUses the PC’s light sensor to brighten in daylight and dim in a dark roomSystem > Display > Brightness
Change brightness based on contentAdjusts brightness and contrast to what is on screen (content adaptive brightness)System > Display > Brightness
Lower screen brightness when using energy saverDims the screen while energy saver is onSystem > Power & battery > Energy saver

Microsoft notes that only some PCs support automatic brightness. When it is on you can still use the slider to fine-tune the level; Windows then adjusts around your choice. On HDR displays the adjustments may take longer to settle, because Windows tunes them to how the eye perceives brightness changes.

Content adaptive brightness has three choices: Off, Always, and On Battery Only. Microsoft suggests changing it if the shifts are distracting or if you do photo and video work where colour accuracy matters. Turning it off can shorten battery life slightly.

If your screen keeps dimming by itself, switch these three off one at a time to find the cause. The energy saver option is covered in our guide to Windows 11 energy saver. A screen that turns off entirely after a few minutes is a different setting: see how to change the screen timeout.

External monitors and desktop PCs

Microsoft states that you may not see the Brightness slider on devices with an external monitor. Most desktop monitors do not take brightness commands from Windows; they have their own buttons or a joystick behind or under the bezel that opens an on-screen menu. Look there for Brightness, Backlight or Luminance.

Some monitors do accept brightness control over the cable, and some maker utilities expose it, but that depends on the monitor and is not part of Windows settings. If Windows does not detect the monitor properly at all, start with external monitor not detected in Windows 11. For multi-screen setups, our multiple monitors guide covers arrangement and scaling.

When the brightness slider is missing on a laptop

On a laptop the built-in panel should always show the slider. If it disappears, the display driver is the usual reason: Windows may be running the generic Microsoft Basic Display Adapter after an update or a failed driver install.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters. If you only see Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the real graphics driver is missing.
  3. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and install any display driver offered, or get the driver from your PC maker’s support page.
  4. Restart and check Quick Settings again.

Our guide to Windows 11 graphics drivers goes through clean driver installs and rollbacks in more detail. Also expand Monitors in Device Manager: if the built-in screen shows as disabled there, enable it and restart.

Brightness, flicker and night viewing

Two related problems often get blamed on brightness. A screen that flickers or pulses at low brightness can come from content adaptive brightness, HDR or the driver; our screen flickering guide has a test sequence. And if the screen feels harsh in the evening, Night light warms the colours, which many people find more comfortable together with a lower brightness level.

Quick checklist

  • Quick Settings slider moves but nothing changes: you are probably on an external monitor; use its buttons.
  • Brightness changes by itself: turn off automatic brightness, content adaptive brightness and the energy saver dimming option one by one.
  • No slider on a laptop: update or reinstall the display driver.
  • Keys do nothing but the slider works: check Fn lock and the maker’s hotkey software.
  • Brightness resets after every restart: install pending driver and firmware updates from Windows Update and your PC maker, then set the level again.

A lower brightness level is also one of the simplest ways to make a laptop battery last longer, so it is worth finding a level you are comfortable with rather than leaving the screen at full power all day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I adjust screen brightness in Windows 11?

Select the network, volume or battery icon on the taskbar to open Quick Settings and drag the Brightness slider. You can also go to Settings > System > Display and use the Brightness slider under Brightness and color.

Why is there no brightness slider on my desktop PC?

Microsoft notes that you may not see the slider on devices with an external monitor. In that case change brightness with the buttons or on-screen menu of the monitor itself.

How do I stop Windows 11 from changing brightness on its own?

In Settings > System > Display, expand Brightness and turn off the option to change brightness automatically when lighting changes, and set Change brightness based on content to Off. Energy saver can also lower brightness, so check that setting too.

What is content adaptive brightness?

On some Windows 11 PCs the built-in screen adjusts brightness and contrast based on what is shown. You can set it to Off, Always or On Battery Only. Turning it off can help with photo work or distracting changes, but battery life may be shorter.

My laptop brightness keys do nothing. What should I check?

Try the slider in Quick Settings first. If the slider works, the keys depend on the laptop maker's hotkey software or the Fn lock. If the slider is also missing or stuck, update or reinstall the display driver.
