Upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro with Key: A Quick Guide

Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated

This page is a short, practical checklist for windows 11 home to pro upgrade key on Windows 11 (versions 24H2 and 25H2). It covers the steps that apply in most cases and points you to our in-depth guides. For the full picture, start with our Windows 11 activation guide.

Check activation status

Open Settings > System > Activation. The Activation state line tells you whether Windows is active and, if so, whether it uses a digital license (and whether that license is linked to your Microsoft account). If Windows is not activated, the same page shows an error code and a Troubleshoot button.

  • A digital license, which most PCs get automatically when they ship with Windows or were upgraded from an activated copy.
  • A 25-character product key from a retail purchase or from your organization, entered under Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
  • Buying Windows 11 from the Microsoft Store through the Activation page.

If you changed major hardware such as the motherboard, run the Activation troubleshooter and choose the option for a recent hardware change while signed in with the Microsoft account linked to the license.

What to avoid

KMS “activators”, cracked builds and scripts that patch Windows are a common source of malware and leave the PC unlicensed. Suspiciously cheap keys from marketplaces can be volume or resold keys that stop working later. If a key is rejected, the error code shown on the Activation page is the fastest route to the cause.

This page is a short checklist and has not yet been expanded into a full guide. Steps follow current Windows 11 menus; if your screens differ, check your version with the winver command.
