Windows 11 Installation Assistant: Steps and Tips to Know
Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated
This page is a short, practical checklist for windows 11 installation assistant on Windows 11 (versions 24H2 and 25H2). It covers the steps that apply in most cases and points you to our in-depth guides. For the full picture, start with our Windows 11 download and install guide.
Use only Microsoft download sources
Windows 11 is free to download from Microsoft’s Download Windows 11 page, which offers three options: the Installation Assistant (upgrades the PC you are on), the Media Creation Tool (builds a USB stick or ISO) and a disk image (ISO) download for x64 PCs, with a separate Arm64 ISO for Arm-based PCs. ISO files from mirror sites, torrent bundles or “pre-activated” builds can contain malware and are not worth the risk.
Check the PC before you start
- Compare the PC with the Windows 11 minimum requirements: a supported 64-bit processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI with Secure Boot capable and TPM 2.0.
- Free up space. A feature update or reinstall needs several gigabytes of free space on the system drive.
- Back up files you cannot replace to an external drive or cloud storage.
- Make a note of how the PC is activated (Settings > System > Activation).
Pick the right tool
| Situation | Tool |
|---|---|
| Upgrading the PC you are using | Installation Assistant or Windows Update |
| Installing on another PC or reinstalling from scratch | Media Creation Tool (USB of 8 GB or more) |
| Virtual machines, in-place repair, or advanced setups | ISO download |
After installation
Open Settings > Windows Update and install everything offered, including optional driver updates if a device is not working. Then confirm activation in Settings > System > Activation. A PC that ran an activated Windows 10 or 11 usually reactivates automatically with its digital license once it is online.
