Windows 11 Laptop Overheating: Causes, Checks and Safe Fixes
Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated

Laptops pack a powerful processor, graphics and battery into a thin case, so they get warm. But a Windows 11 laptop overheating to the point where the fans roar constantly, the keyboard is uncomfortable, the PC slows to a crawl or simply switches off is telling you something. This guide helps you separate normal warmth from a real problem, find the software causes Windows can fix, and recognise the hardware causes that need a technician.
The steps apply to any laptop on Windows 11 version 24H2, 25H2 or 26H2.
Normal warmth or overheating?
| Normal | Not normal |
|---|---|
| Warm underside during video calls or games | Hot keyboard while only browsing |
| Fans speed up under load, then settle | Fans loud at idle, or never stop |
| Brief slowdowns during heavy tasks | Constant sluggishness when warm |
| Sudden shutdowns, often with a thermometer warning on some models | |
| Grinding, ticking or rattling fan noise |
Microsoft’s Surface guidance makes two useful general points: some warmth during normal use is expected, and if a device exceeds its maximum operating temperature it shuts down immediately to protect itself. It also says a fan should never sound as if something is broken.
Step 1: Give it air
Most laptops draw air in from underneath or the sides and blow it out of vents at the back or side. On a bed, sofa, cushion or lap, those intakes are partly blocked.
- Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface such as a desk or table.
- Keep the exhaust vents clear of walls, books and bags.
- Avoid direct sun and hot cars.
- A simple stand that lifts the back improves airflow underneath.
Step 2: Find what is working the processor
Heat comes from work. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Processes and sort by CPU, then by GPU.
- A browser tab running video or a heavy web app can keep the CPU busy; close it.
- Background sync, indexing or Windows Update can run for a while after a big update; let them finish once while plugged in.
- An unknown process using a lot of CPU deserves a scan in Windows Security.
Microsoft’s Surface fan guidance notes that closing apps you do not need lowers CPU use and reduces the need for fan cooling. For persistent high load, work through Windows 11 high CPU usage. To find a background program that only causes trouble at startup, a clean boot helps; Microsoft’s clean boot page explains how.
Step 3: Choose a cooler power mode
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode:
- Best Power Efficiency: Microsoft says it reduces power use by limiting background activity. Coolest and quietest.
- Balanced: the default, a good compromise.
- Best Performance: fastest, warmest and loudest. Microsoft’s Surface guidance notes higher performance modes let the device become warmer and the fan spin faster.
Windows 11 energy saver also reduces background work. Many laptop makers have their own thermal or fan modes in their utility app; a “quiet” or “cool” profile there can help a lot.
Step 4: Update drivers and firmware
Fan control and power management depend on the BIOS/UEFI and chipset drivers. Install everything in Settings > Windows Update, including Advanced options > Optional updates, then check the PC maker’s support site for BIOS, chipset and thermal management updates. Graphics drivers matter on gaming laptops; see Windows 11 graphics drivers.
Step 5: Gaming and heavy work
Games, video exports and 3D work push the processor and graphics to their limits. To reduce heat:
- Cap the frame rate in the game or graphics settings; there is no point rendering more frames than the screen shows. See cap FPS.
- Lower graphics quality slightly.
- Use the laptop maker’s balanced profile rather than its maximum one.
- Play plugged in, on a hard surface, in a cool room.

Step 6: Dust and hardware
After a couple of years, fans and heat sinks collect dust and fluff, and the thermal paste between the processor and the heat sink can dry out. Symptoms: the fan runs fast even at light load, temperatures climb quickly, and the laptop throttles or shuts down.
Cleaning inside a laptop means opening it, which can void the warranty and damage parts. Unless you are confident and the maker’s manual shows how, have the PC maker or a repair shop clean the fan and renew the thermal paste. Blowing compressed air into the vents from outside helps a little, but hold the fan still so it does not overspin.
Stop using the laptop and get it checked if you notice a swollen battery, a burning smell or a fan making grinding noises.
Background work after updates and setup
A new laptop, or one that has just installed a big update, often runs warm for a day. Windows indexes files for search, Microsoft Defender scans, OneDrive syncs and apps update themselves. This is normal and settles once the work is done. Leave the laptop plugged in and awake for an evening so it can finish, rather than judging temperatures in the first hours.
If heat appears right after a specific update and does not settle, check Windows 11 slow after update and look in Task Manager for the process responsible.
Heat and the battery
Heat ages batteries faster. If the laptop is often hot while charging, check battery wear with the battery report and see Windows 11 battery not charging, since many laptops pause charging when hot. Shutdowns without a heat warning point elsewhere; see Windows 11 random shutdown.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Windows 11 laptop so hot?
Usually high CPU or GPU load from an app, blocked air vents, dust in the fan, or a performance power mode. Thin laptops also run warm by design under load.
Can overheating damage my laptop?
Laptops protect themselves by slowing down and, if needed, shutting down. Microsoft's Surface guidance notes the device shuts down immediately if it exceeds its maximum operating temperature. Repeated heat still shortens battery life.
Which power mode keeps a laptop coolest?
Best Power Efficiency, in Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Microsoft's Surface guidance says higher performance modes let the device get warmer and the fan spin faster.
Do laptop cooling pads help?
They can lower temperatures a little by improving airflow underneath, but they do not fix a clogged fan or a runaway app.
How do I see the CPU temperature in Windows 11?
Windows does not show CPU temperature in Settings. Task Manager shows GPU temperature on many PCs and the drive temperature appears in Drive health for NVMe SSDs; the PC maker's utility usually shows CPU temperature.
