Windows 11 Search Not Working? Fixes for Blank Results
Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated
Windows 11 search not working can mean several different things: the search panel opens blank, you cannot type in the box, results take forever, or files and apps you know exist never show up. The first two are usually a hung search process and take seconds to fix. Missing results are usually an indexing problem. Only when search fails in every account do you need to repair Windows itself.
These steps apply to Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2, Home and Pro. While search is broken, you can still find files with the search box in File Explorer and start programs with Windows key + R.
Quick fixes: restart search and the PC
Windows 11 runs the search interface in a process called SearchHost.exe. Ending it is safe; Windows starts it again the next time you search.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click SearchHost.exe and select End task, then confirm.
- Press the Windows key or select the search box and try again.
If that does not help, restart the PC from Start > Power > Restart. A restart also completes any update that is waiting to install, and pending updates often leave search half-working. Check Settings > Windows Update for anything still to install.
If the whole Start menu or taskbar is unresponsive, not just search, see our Start menu not working guide first.
Check the search box settings
If the box itself is missing, it may just be hidden. Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and, under Taskbar items, set Search to the style you want, such as Search box or Search icon only.
If web or account results are missing but local results work, check Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions. Cloud content search controls whether results from your Microsoft account or work or school account (such as OneDrive files) appear. Settings managed by an organisation may be locked on work PCs.
Make sure the Windows Search service is running
The Windows Search service maintains the index. If it is stopped, file results are slow, incomplete or missing.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Search and double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start) if it is different, select Start if the service is stopped, and select OK.
Microsoft also suggests restarting the Windows Font Cache Service when search is unresponsive: in the same console, right-click Windows Font Cache Service, select Stop, try searching, then right-click it again and select Start.
Fix missing results: indexing settings
Windows only searches the contents of indexed locations quickly. By default, Classic indexing covers your libraries and desktop, so files stored elsewhere (another drive, or a folder at the root of C:) may not appear.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Under Find my files, choose Classic to index your libraries and desktop, or Enhanced to index the whole PC. Enhanced finds more but uses more battery and processor time while indexing.
- With Classic, use Customize search locations to add folders that should be included.
- Check the Excluded folders list on the same page, and remove anything that should be searched.
The indexing status near the top of the page shows how many items have been indexed and whether indexing is still running. A large index on a slow drive can take hours to build; leave the PC on and plugged in.
Rebuild the search index
If the index is damaged, results stay wrong no matter what you change. Rebuilding is safe; it does not touch your files.
- In Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, select Advanced indexing options.
- Select Advanced, then Rebuild, and confirm.
- Leave the PC running until the status reports that indexing is complete. Results will be incomplete until then.
While the index rebuilds, Microsoft Windows Search Indexer may use noticeable disk and processor time; that is expected. If indexing seems to slow the whole PC down for days, our disk usage guide covers the general fixes.
Reset Windows Search
For persistent problems, Microsoft publishes a PowerShell script, ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1, that resets Windows Search on Windows 11. It is linked from Microsoft’s Fix problems in Windows Search article, which also explains the steps. Note that the script requires administrator rights and a temporary change to the PowerShell execution policy; change the policy back to its previous value afterwards, as the article describes. Resetting search does not affect your files.
It is also worth signing in to a different user account. If search works there, the problem is limited to your profile, and Microsoft’s article describes further profile-level repairs for advanced users.
Repair Windows
If search fails in every account, repair the system files.
- Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin).
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. - Run
sfc /scannow, then restart.
Our guides to DISM and SFC explain the results. If search broke right after an update, uninstall it from Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
As a last step, go to Settings > System > Recovery and select Reinstall now next to Fix problems using Windows Update. This reinstalls the current version of Windows while keeping your apps, files and settings. Reset this PC, on the same page, is the final option; back up first.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Windows 11 search show a blank window?
The search interface process has usually hung. End SearchHost.exe in Task Manager > Details, or restart the PC, and search again.
Why can't Windows 11 search find my files?
The folder may not be indexed or the index may be incomplete. Check Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, add the folder or choose Enhanced, and rebuild the index if needed.
Does rebuilding the search index delete files?
No. It only deletes and recreates the index Windows uses to find files quickly. Search results may be incomplete until the rebuild finishes.
Where did the search box on the taskbar go?
It can be hidden or shown as an icon only. Choose the style in Settings > Personalization > Taskbar under Taskbar items > Search.
Can I search without the search box while it is broken?
Yes. Use the search box in File Explorer for files, and press Windows key + R to start programs by name.
