Windows 11 Webcam Not Working? Fix Privacy, Driver, Apps
Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated
When a Windows 11 webcam is not working, the cause is rarely a broken camera. Far more often it is a closed privacy shutter, a camera key that switched it off, a privacy setting that blocks apps, another app holding on to the camera, or a driver that went wrong after an update. Working through those in order fixes most cases in a few minutes, without reinstalling anything.
The steps below apply to built-in laptop cameras and USB webcams on Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2, Home and Pro. Error messages like “We can’t find your camera” in the Camera app, or a black preview in Teams, Zoom or a browser, all lead back to the same checks.
Step 1: Rule out the physical causes
- Privacy shutter. Many laptops and webcams have a small sliding cover over the lens. If the preview is black but the camera light comes on, the shutter is the first suspect.
- Camera key or switch. Some laptops have a function key with a camera icon, or a switch on the side, that cuts power to the camera. When it is off, Windows may not see the camera at all. Press it and wait a few seconds.
- USB webcams. Unplug and reconnect, then try a different USB port directly on the PC rather than a hub, dock or front-panel port. Try the webcam on another PC if you can.
- Restart. A full restart releases a camera that an app failed to let go of.
Step 2: Check camera privacy settings
Windows 11 has several switches that can each block the camera. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and check them from top to bottom:
| Setting | What it must be | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Camera access | On | Whether anything on this PC can use the camera |
| Let apps access your camera | On | Store apps, such as Camera, WhatsApp or Teams from the Store |
| The switch next to your app | On | Permission for that one app |
| Let desktop apps access your camera | On | Classic programs and most browsers, Zoom and many video tools |
Desktop apps do not appear individually with their own switch; they share the last one. Browsers also have their own permission per website: if the camera works in the Camera app but not on a website, check the camera permission in the browser’s site settings. Our Windows 11 privacy settings guide covers the other permissions on this page.
If a setting is greyed out with a note that it is managed by your organization, a work or school administrator controls it.
Step 3: Check the Cameras page and test with the Camera app
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
- Your camera should appear under Connected cameras. If it is listed but marked as disabled, select it and choose Enable.
- Select the camera to see a preview and basic settings such as brightness and contrast. On supported PCs, extra effects such as background blur appear here too.
- If it is not listed at all, Windows does not detect it; go to Step 5.
Then open the Camera app from Start. If you see a picture there, Windows and the driver are fine, and the problem is the other app’s permission or its own camera selection.
Step 4: Close apps that hold the camera
Most webcams can only be used by one app at a time. A meeting app running in the background, a second browser tab with a call open, or streaming software can keep it busy and leave the next app with a black screen.
- Check Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, which lists recent camera activity by app.
- Close those apps fully, including from the notification area next to the clock.
- In the app you want to use, open its video settings and confirm it has picked the right camera. PCs with an infrared camera for Windows Hello, a virtual camera from streaming software or a docked laptop may show several cameras.
Some third-party security suites have a webcam protection feature that blocks apps they do not recognise. If you use one, check its settings or allowed apps list.
Step 5: Fix the camera driver in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras. Some webcams appear under Imaging devices or Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the device has a down-arrow icon, it is disabled: right-click and choose Enable device.
- If it has a yellow warning sign, open Properties and read the status message.
- If the problem started after an update, open Properties > Driver and select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Otherwise, right-click the camera, choose Uninstall device, confirm, then select Action > Scan for hardware changes so Windows reinstalls it. Restart if needed.
If the Camera app shows error 0xA00F4244 (NoCamerasAreAttached) and updating the driver does not help, Microsoft suggests trying the generic driver for USB webcams: in the camera’s Properties > Driver, select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer, choose USB Video Device and restart.
If the camera is missing from Device Manager completely and it is built in, it may be switched off in the PC’s firmware (UEFI) settings or by the camera key. Check the PC maker’s documentation for the camera option in firmware.
Step 6: Update Windows and drivers
Go to Settings > Windows Update, install pending updates, then look under Advanced options > Optional updates for camera or chipset drivers. For laptops, the maker’s support page often has a newer camera driver than Windows Update. External webcams from well-known brands may also need the maker’s app for features such as autofocus or zoom, though basic video works without it. If a recent Windows update lines up with the problem, see our guide to fixing problems after a Windows 11 update.
Still not working?
Run the camera troubleshooter in the Get Help app (search Start for Get Help and type camera), and repair Windows files with System File Checker. If the camera is not detected on another PC, or a built-in camera never appears even after the checks above, the hardware or its internal cable is likely faulty. For a step-by-step order of general repairs, use our Windows 11 troubleshooting guide, and if the webcam only fails during sign-in with face recognition, see Windows Hello.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Windows 11 say it can't find my camera?
The camera is turned off, disconnected, disabled in Windows or the firmware, or its driver failed to load. Check the shutter and camera key, the Cameras page in Settings and the Cameras section in Device Manager.
My webcam works in the Camera app but not in Teams or Zoom. Why?
The app probably lacks permission or is set to use a different camera. Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera in Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, then pick the right camera in the app's own audio and video settings.
How do I know if another app is using my camera?
Settings > Privacy & security > Camera lists apps with recent camera activity. Close any video call, recording or streaming app that appears, then try again.
Can a Windows update break the webcam?
Yes, a new camera driver delivered by Windows Update can cause problems. Roll it back in Device Manager or install the driver from your PC or webcam maker.
Is my webcam broken?
If it is not detected on another PC, or a built-in camera never appears in Device Manager even after checking the firmware settings, it is likely a hardware fault.
