Windows 11 Language Settings: Display Language, Time Zone
Written by Windows 11 Field Guide Editorial Team · Updated

Windows 11 language settings decide which language menus and messages appear in, which languages you can type and dictate in, and how Microsoft Store apps and websites pick a language. The same Time & language section of Settings also holds the clock and time zone, which is why a PC bought abroad or moved to a new country often needs both fixed at once.
This guide covers adding a language, switching the display language, the “only one language pack” message, speech features, removing languages, and setting the time zone and daylight saving correctly. It applies to Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2.
Where everything lives
Open Settings (Windows key + I) and select Time & language. The pages you need:
| Page | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Date & time | Clock, time zone, daylight saving, the clock in the taskbar |
| Language & region | Display language, preferred languages, language features, region |
| Typing | Text suggestions, autocorrect, advanced keyboard settings |
| Speech | Speech language and voice settings |
Keyboard layouts are attached to each language but are a separate topic; if the layout keeps switching or you need another one, see how to change the keyboard language in Windows 11.
Add a language
Language packs download from the internet, so connect first, save your work and close open apps.
- Go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Next to Preferred languages, select Add a language.
- Choose the language and select Next.
- Under Install language features, keep Language pack selected. Add optional features such as speech recognition if you want them.
- Select Install and wait for the download to finish.
Change the Windows display language
- On the same Language & region page, open the Windows display language drop-down.
- Choose the language you installed.
- When Windows says it needs to sign you out, save your work and sign out.
- Sign back in. Microsoft warns that the keyboard layout may change with the language, so check the input indicator on the taskbar before you type your password or PIN.
Changing the display language also moves it to the top of Preferred languages. Microsoft explains that the first supported language in that list is the one Microsoft Store apps and websites use, so you can reorder the list if you want apps in a different language from Windows itself.
“Only one language pack allowed”
If you see “Only one language pack allowed” or “Your Windows license supports only one display language”, your copy of Windows is a single-language edition, common on laptops sold in some regions. You can still add other languages for typing and in apps; only the Windows display language is fixed. Changing that requires a multi-language edition, which our guide to Windows 11 Home vs Pro touches on. Check your edition under Settings > System > About.
Speech and other language features
- In Language & region, select the three dots next to a language and choose Language options.
- Under Language features, select Download next to the features you want, such as text-to-speech, basic speech recognition or enhanced speech recognition.
Microsoft notes that not every language includes speech features, and that you should make the language your display language before installing its speech features. These feed tools such as voice typing and Live captions.
Region and formats
Below the language list, the Region section holds two separate settings. Country or region tells Windows and the Microsoft Store where you are, which affects local content and Store availability. Regional format controls how dates, times, numbers and currency appear, for example whether the date is written day first or month first. You can keep an English display language with a regional format from another country; the two do not have to match. If a spreadsheet shows dates in an unexpected order, the regional format is the first place to look.
Remove a language
Select the three dots next to the language and choose Remove, then confirm. If Remove is greyed out, that language is the current display language: switch to another display language first, sign out and in, then remove it.
Set the time and time zone
- Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Keep Set time automatically on. To set the clock manually, turn it off and select Change next to Set the date and time.
- Keep Set time zone automatically on, or turn it off and choose your zone from the Time zone list.
- If the time zone is set manually, use Adjust for daylight saving time automatically so summer time changes happen on their own.
The same page has a switch to show the time and date in the system tray, and on recent builds an option to show seconds in the clock, which Microsoft notes uses more power.
When the time is still wrong
- Wrong by exactly one or more hours: the time zone or daylight saving setting is wrong. Set the zone by hand.
- Drifts or shows an old date after start-up: make sure Set time automatically is on and select Sync now under Additional settings if your build shows it. A desktop PC whose clock resets every time it is unplugged may have a weak motherboard battery.
- Dual boot with Linux: the two systems can disagree on how the hardware clock is stored, which shows up as an offset of a few hours.
More everyday settings are collected in the Windows 11 settings hub.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the display language in Windows 11?
Go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region. Add the language if it is not listed, then choose it in the Windows display language drop-down and sign out when Windows asks. Sign back in to see the new language.
Why does Windows say only one language pack is allowed?
Your Windows license supports only one display language, which is the case on single-language editions. You can still add keyboard layouts and use other languages in apps and websites.
How do I change the time zone in Windows 11?
Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn off Set time zone automatically, and pick your zone in the Time zone list.
My clock is wrong even though the time zone is right. What now?
Make sure Set time automatically is on. If the time is still wrong, check the daylight saving option and see our time sync guide; a PC that loses time while switched off may also have a weak motherboard battery.
Why can't I remove a language?
The Remove option is greyed out for the current display language. Switch the display language to another one first, sign out and back in, then remove it.
